At Hillstone Primary school we believe that a child, who is physically active, is a happier child. The early years of a child's life builds the paving blocks to fundamental skills for future activity, developing agility, balance, coordination and sport specific skills. Sport and Physical Education promotes health and exercise and means our children will be more likely to be active adults. Not only does sport have physical benefits but it also develops their social attributes, improving their confidence, teamwork and communication skills. Sport helps to install a 'growth mind set' in children, helping them to deal with failure and mistakes and to understand that these are needed to improve and should be celebrated. Sport gives children a practical way of experiencing this.
Super 4s Athletics
On Wednesday 19th June, ten children from years 3 and 4 participated in a Super 4s athletics competition at Fox Hollies Leisure Centre. This is an event that here at Hillstone we have built a strong reputation after being named all Birmingham winners last year in the school games finals. With this added pressure our team were eager to impress.
As part of the event each child in our team had to complete a 60 meter sprint, 400 meter run, long jump and javelin throw. For this event you need athletes that are well rounded and can do well in all events to get success. With nineteen schools participating, we knew we would have to be at our very best. With really strong scores from some schools in the morning our team would need to score 1300 points to get the win.
Our children smashed some of their personal bests, jumping throwing and running out of their skin. We scored a combined score of 1450 points, with two of our girls getting 1st place and 2nd place out of the girl participants and two of our boys doing the same.
What a fantastic achievement. We now go onto the School Games Finals in July.
