Religious Education

Giving the tools

We aim to provide our children with the tools to be able to explore other faiths in an open and non-judgmental way.

To be able to reflect on their own beliefs and values as well as recognise and identify the beliefs of others and develop from an early age a healthy acceptance / tolerance that people’s beliefs are different and that it’s alright to be so.

Experience

At Hillstone our children will experience R.E. through the many varied festival celebrations that occur throughout the six major world faiths of Islam, Buddhism, Sikhism, Christianity, Judaism and Hinduism. In learning about religion the children will experience some of the stories relating to the various aspects of each faith, listen to faith members give their experience of their values. The children will be exposed to art work, artefacts, clothing and food related to the faith. We would also normally visit each place of worship to give pupils that practical and person experience of the faith.

Curriculum aims

Traditions and practises

In learning from the religious traditions and practices studied the pupils should be able to give responses as to how they / or others might feel at the time of the celebrations and going forward. Also be able to identify similar special times / occasions in their lives where clothing, food, venues or items are special to them and why.

Here at Hillstone we tend to use a cross curricular approach to learning and as such where possible the religious festivals are linked to the terms topic eg. When studying India (year 4) they will look at aspects of Hinduism such as Diwali or Holi. Parts of Religious Education crosses over into PSHE or as we call it at Hillstone our ‘Life Skills’ lessons and our ‘Learning Powers’ lessons, which teach values of perseverance and learning from our mistakes.
