Science

Intent

At Hillstone Primary School, we aim to instil a sense of awe at the workings of our universe and encourage children to ask “How?” and “Why?”

Our curriculum has been planned to ensure progression from EYFS to Year 6, reflecting the expectations set out in the National Curriculum.

Science teaching is never standalone. Science lessons are always part of broader units.

This approach provides a sense of purpose and improves children’s science capital. There is far more to science that remembering information.

We provide a wide variety of opportunities for children to develop their Working Scientifically skills. As a school, we are developing our use of STEM projects to drive science.

It is our belief that pupil-led investigations are a superb way to motivate and inspire the scientist of tomorrow.

We believe that all children, regardless of ethnic origin, gender, class, aptitude or disability, are entitled to a broad, balanced and enjoyable science education.

Our key aims in science teaching are as follows:

  • Prepare our children for life in an increasingly scientific and technological world
  • Help our children develop their understanding of key scientific principles
  • Develop our children’s curiosity and use it as a spark to drive learning
  • Use growing food as a unifying tool which brings together all aspects of school life, from the curriculum to the canteen
  • Foster concern about, and active care for, wildlife and our environment
  • Provide our children with enjoyable experiences that develop a deep and lasting interest in the subject, motivating them to study science further
  • To demonstrate and promote diversity in science
  • Provide opportunities for the development of practical science skills
  • Enable our children to become effective communicators of scientific ideas, facts and data
