OUR TOPIC IS AMAZING ANIMALS
In this project, we will explore different species of animals through their habitats, their basic needs in order to survive and develop an understanding of simple food chains.

In this project, we will explore different species of animals through their habitats, their basic needs in order to survive and develop an understanding of simple food chains.
In this project, we will look at transport in our local area and
the history of the canals, cars, trains and ’planes and the impact
on the way we live.
This half term our topic has a geography focus. We will be building on our knowledge from Year 1, learning about the continents and oceans. We will also identify hot and cold areas of the word in relation to the equator and the North and South Poles. The children will be using compasses to give directions and learning about the four basic compass points.
This half term the children will learn about Queen Elizabeth I and Queen Victoria’s reigns. They will look at how Elizabeth began the expansion of the British Empire and how this developed during Victoria’s time as monarch. They will also consider if the explorers were heroes or villains.
In this term, we will be scientists, conducting investigations into the uses and properties of everyday materials
Good To Be Me is a science topic. The children will learn about how to keep themselves healthy, including eating a balanced diet, exercising and keeping their bodies clean. We will be conducting investigations to find out why soap is important for washing our hands and to show the impact of exercise on our bodies. This will also link to our Design and Technology work this half term, where children will be designing and making their own healthy sandwich or wrap to enjoy at a class picnic.
This topic will also cross over into our Hillstone Lifeskills lessons, as we will focus on building self-esteem and independence in readiness for Year 3.

In writing, we will be learning how to write a range of non-fiction texts. We will be focused on writing a report for our science investigation about how exercise impacts our body. The children will build upon their existing knowledge of complex sentences, adverbs and adjectives. We will also look at how verbs change when we are writing in the past tense compared to in the present tense.
We will be reading a range of fiction and non-fiction texts, beginning with Giraffe’s Can’t Dance by Giles Andreae. The children will be choosing words and phrases that they like from a particular book and explaining the reasons why. Additionally, the children will continue to build their confidence when answering retrieval and inference questions.
This half term we will be telling the time to the nearest 5 minutes. This is an important life skill, so we ask that you please support your child with this at home. We will also be learning about volume and capacity, measuring amounts of liquids in mililitres and comparing amounts to one litre. We will then review some key knowledge that has been taught throughout Year 2, focusing on number and place value skills.
Physical activity not only improves health, reduces stress and improves concentration, but also promotes correct physical growth and development. Exercise has a positive influence on academic achievement, emotional stability and interaction with others.
This term we are practising our athletics skills which will be applied in activities in Sports Day. We are also revisiting skills involved in most invasion games ready for Year 3.
We are lucky to have Warwickshire Cricket Board delivering our cricket on Thursdays.
2N will be doing PE on Wednesday and Friday. Please could you ensure that you child has their PE kit with them on these days. It would be extremely useful if children could bring in a pair of gym pumps and a pair of trainers. During the cold weather, please provide warm clothing for lessons outside.

You will be expected to record reading in your child’s diary. This is a fantastic resource for the children to use, but also key for parent and teacher communication. Please read with your child, at least 3 times per week and record this in their diary with further comments.
Please read at home with your children at least 3 times and make a comment in your child’s reading diary. If yur child requires any additional work to do at home, please come and see their class teacher.
Good attendance and punctuality is essential to help your child achieve the best they possibly can.
Every week the attendance cup is awarded to the class with the best attendance – hopefully our class can win the cup lots of times this coming term!
We will also be awarded points in the Punctuality League. Let’s see if we can beat last year’s score.
Please ensure children wear the correct school uniform, including black shoes and plain socks. Jewellery must not be worn. Please label all items so that they can be easily reacquainted with children if they are mislaid. This includes the inside of coats, shoes, hats, gloves and scarves.
Children can achieve house points for trying hard with their work!

Children can achieve reward stamps for trying hard with their behaviour! Every time they collect 50 stamps, they are awarded with a certificate.
